Book Review: Numerical Methods and Implementation in Geotechnical Engineering

Many good books on numerical analysis of geotechnical problems are available. The new book set Numerical Methods and Implementation in Geotechnical Engineering by YM Cheng, JH Wang, L Liang and Ivan WH Fung is a new addition that concentrates on a wide range of numerical methods and their implementations in geotechnical engineering. The authors of the book are all very active and experienced researchers in the related field.

The new book set covers a wide spectrum of numerical methods in geotechnical engineering, including finite element method, optimization method, slip line method, limit analysis method and distinct element method. The principles and implementations of these methods are well introduced and clearly formulated. Some recent advances in large deformation analysis of geotechnical problems using Smoothed-Particle Hydrodynamics Method and Material Point Method are also well approached with a plain manner. The introduction of numerical implementations of various numerical methods with some sample computer programs is an excellent addition, which is ideal for postgraduates and engineers who want to develop computer programs. The book overall provides the fundamental knowledge to develop inhouse computer programs to consider special constitutive models, loadings, numerical methods, boundary conditions and other effects for people’s own uses.

It also includes the discussion of the limitations of different numerical methods and associated common commercial program problems. This is perhaps more important than the fundamentals of the methods themselves, as it provides more insights into the understanding and proper use of the methods. The set covers almost all common numerical methods in geotechnical engineering and having a hands-on tutorial makes it different from some of the available textbooks and professional books.

I believe that Numerical Methods and Implementation in Geotechnical Engineering will be a useful reference for senior undergraduates, postgraduates, engineers as well as researchers.
